Rosacea is a skin condition that results in red and blotchy skin, mainly on the face. It can also show exposed blood vessels on the nose and cheeks in severe cases. There are different types of rosacea and some people may suffer more severe cases than others.
4 stages of Rosacea:
Stage 1: Pre-Rosacea
In this stage, it can manifest as frequent redness or flushing of the skin on the face. This redness usually does not stay for a long time.
Stage 2: Mild rosacea
When the redness remains for a significantly longer period of time as a result of the small blood vessels remaining open. The skin will look ‘pinkish’ or glowing.
Stage 3: Moderate rosacea
When the redness persists for a long period of time, days at a time. There may also be a semi-permanent red flush on the skin of the nose and cheeks. You may also see small visible blood vessels (capillaries) in areas of redness.
Stage 4: Severe rosacea
When the redness becomes extremely intense and may be combined with inflammation, swelling of the skin, burning or other pain. You may also experience pustules and enlargement of the nose.
Why do you get Rosacea?
Rosacea is a result of a compromised immune system. This occurs due to damage to your digestive tract. As a result, your skin becomes sensitive to certain ingredients and irritants. Alcohol and smoking can also contribute to the inflammation that causes rosacea.
How to treat and manage rosacea?
There is no set cure for how to get rid of rosacea permanently, but there are many things you can do to reduce the appearance of redness. Here are some things you can do to treat rosacea.
Recognize triggers and flare-ups
The following symptoms are often found on the cheeks, temples, forehead, nose and even the eye area. It can start in one area and spread to other areas of the face; flushing, redness, sensitivity or dry skin that may burn or sting, small bumps and pimples or acne-like breakouts and skin that becomes coarser and thicker with an uneven texture.
Avoid harsh chemicals
Some skincare products or soaps will contain harsh chemicals that will only further irritate your skin or cause an additional burning sensation. It’s important to avoid products containing these chemicals and use products for rosacea.
Search for products that are good for rosacea
In addition to avoiding skincare products with harsh chemicals, you should always look for those that are tailored to rosacea specifically. These will have the right soothing ingredients to ensure your skin is not further irritated. The ingredients work in harmony with rosacea, such as rosacea treatment products, rosacea cleanser and rosacea serum.
What you should avoid
When suffering from rosacea, you should try to avoid certain foods, drinks and habits to ensure your skin condition doesn’t get worse. Avoid:
Excessive alcohol consumption
Dairy
Spicy food
Chocolate
Hot drinks
